  • I was bitten by a western diamondback when I was 16. It was my fault I was bitten. The snake was sunning itself on a golf green and I tried to drag it off the green by grabbing it by the tail and dragging it off the green so we could finish our round of golf. I paid a severe price for being so damn stupid. I was never near death but I was scared shitless and after the bite, I'll admit I was far from calm. Fortunately for me, we were playing on the base's golf course and the base hospital was less than a mile away from the golf course. On parts of the golf course, we could actually see the upper level of the hospital through the trees. The golf pro at the clubhouse wrapped a bandage around the bite, it could have been a compression bandage but since I was bitten over fifty years ago I can't say for sure what type of bandage he applied to my right forearm. I was vomiting and sweating profusely when we entered the ER. I also was very lightheaded and unsteady on my feet. My friends had to help me from the truck and into the ER. I was 6'5" 220 lbs and in excellent condition, but again, I'm unsure if my size had anything to do with reducing the severity of the bite. I stayed several days in the hospital and I lost about ten to fifteen lbs after the bite and my recovery. I lost my appetite for quite a while. My football coach was very upset with me for missing two a days that month and once I was fully recovered he punished me by endlessly running me before and after practice. I also was suspended from the golf course for one year, I lost my swimming privileges to the base pool, and I was required to work at the golf course that summer after football practice as further punishment for ignoring the signs posted all over the golf course stating-Do not approach or handle snakes! The signs were ubiquitous and posted everywhere on the course. Sorry to ramble and post such a lengthy message, Dingo. I just want to reinforce how dangerous snakes are and that when you see a snake in the wild and you're not a scientist or professional snake handler leave the area immediately and get to safety. Had I been in South Africa, Asia, or any other locale where there are snakes with 100s and 1000s of time the venom toxicity of a rattlesnake and I stupidly grasped a snake such as a black mamba or an inland taipan by the tail I would have most definitely died that day. Although I've never touched a snake since the day I was bitten I still love them and enjoy watching videos like yours. I'll leave my snake viewing from afar from now on, though.

  • Children here hunt deer and have a rifle at age 12. Although you could argue that they are young men. Teach children early. By teaching, I mean responsibility, not ignorance. The danger is inevitable in life, why not share the beauty and worry less about the danger. Glad others share their passion and knowledge with their children.

  • How's the kids going to learn if you don't take him that's my question my dad took me everywhere unless it was a drinking party or something like that but anytime it was work-related and my dad didn't have to go to the shop or something he would take me as a kid and show me what to do when I became a teenager I was able to go to the shop and learn but I digress our children won't learn anything unless we show them I was moving thousand to 2 thousand pound granite slabs and helping flip them on to the saw table by the time I was 13

  • Hammarsdale! My parents had a farm at Hammarsdale from the early 80s until my Dad passed away in 2003. It was called Inchanga Farm and was on the right of the road from the Highway to Hammarsdale just at the crest of the hill before dropping down to the town. The only Mamba I saw was when my Dad was about to prune a vine that trailed over the gate leading to the vegetable and fruit garden when the top of the branch he was about to cut moved, it was a Black Mamba! He slowly moved back and let it continue happily on its way. I can see that scene now all those years later.
